Are you taking sufficient Iron in your diet?

iron deficiency

From past 2 years, I started noticing hair fall but I took it very lightly and put it on the change of place and weather and what not. In fact, I told my hair fall problem to the saloon guy and he suggested me the keratin treatment to help strengthen the hair strands. But that also didn’t work so I thought it’s the high time I should consult a doctor.

I went to the dermatologist and she told me to get the blood test and iron test done and to my surprise, I had quite a low level of iron and that was the reason I was facing severe hair fall and dizziness. And now I am on iron supplements. That’s the reason I thought of writing this post to create awareness about Iron intake.

Why is Iron important

Iron has an essential role in numerous metabolic pathways in the body, including transport of oxygen in the blood, DNA synthesis, breathing, immune function, and energy production.

Symptoms of iron deficiency include tiredness, neurobehavioural disorders like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and restless leg syndrome (a nervous system disorder that creates an irresistible and sometimes unbearable urge to move the legs), and cognitive impairment in children. Iron deficiency can have a serious impact on health and productivity.

Causes of iron deficiency:

There are lots of complex causes of iron deficiency and anemia, and they should be carefully investigated before being addressed. Poor dietary intake is an important cause of iron deficiency. Iron is one of a number of essential nutrients we need to get through our diet.

Dietary sources of iron

Dietary iron is obtained in the form of haem iron or non-haem iron. Haem iron sources include red meat, poultry, and fish while non-haem iron from a variety of plant foods such as legumes, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, fresh and dried fruit.

In 6-8 months, one should go for a proper blood test to check the hemoglobin, thyroid, and minerals etc.  A good diet doesn’t mean you won’t have any deficiency. One should always keep a track of her body and eat healthy and exercise.
