Review: Kadalu Restaurant for Coastal Cuisine, Lajpat Nagar

kadalu review

My office has shifted from Noida to Delhi and the travel time of 1.5 hours is tiring. The very thought of trying out new food places in Delhi keeps me happy every day. This time it was Kadalu which is located in busy area of Lajpat Nagar. Kadalu is famous for their coastal cuisine and Mangalorean dishes.

The name of the restaurant grabbed my attention and it actually means “sea” in Kannada. This place is a nice cozy family restaurant which can accommodate, I feel 30 people at a time. Their staff is courteous and ready to help you out with the dishes. So here’s what I ate along with my friends:

We were served with chaach with the south Indian touch to it. It had fried curry leaves and green chilies in it which I did not like much

  • Starters

We had chicken tikka, tandoori mushroom, Surmai Koliwada and Hyderabadi chicken. chicken tikka was slightly on the spicier side. I enjoyed Hyderabadi chicken as it reminded me of my good old Hyderabad days. What I enjoyed the most was tandoori mushroom – it was grilled mushroom with coconut cravings and masala stuffed inside. I recommend you all to try this. Surmai Koliwada is basically deep fried surmai fish, it was good.Kadalu full meal

  • Main course

We had surmai gassi, gassi means gravy. The gravy was nice and the fish pieces were tender. You are supposed to have this dish with neer dosa. My friends from south told me that they give neer  dosa to kids :P. On teh similar base we had veg gassi, this we had with malabar paratha. But my favourite was the Chicken chettinaad. The curry was excellent with coconut flavor and the chicken pieces were flavorful and succulent. I tried chicken chettinad with neer dosa, appam and Malabar paratha and trust me it tastes better with paratha. Then we tried Garhwali dal which was spicy perfectly tempered yellow dal.

  • Dessert – We were served with ice-cream which was topped with chocolate sauce and roasted cashew and almonds which made it taste even better

Though their speciality is coastal food and we tried the coastal manglorean dishes in the lunch which I haven’t found in Noida. Kadalu is undoubtedly a nice budgeted coastal restaurant in Delhi. They do serve North Indian cuisine too but I preferred their coastal Mangalorean cuisine over it. Service was prompt and pricing was very reasonable. The menu has some amazing items in both south Indian as well as North Indian cuisine.

What you must try – Surmai gassi with neer dosa/appam, chicken chettinad, garhwali dal and Hyderabadi chicken

I am looking forward to having lunch here again.
