What to pack in the hospital bag for delivery in India- 2020

what to pack in hospital bag

As your due date is coming nearer it’s time for you to pack your hospital bag and keep it ready in your car. Looking at the current covid situation it is best to start preparing it from the 8th month onwards. This list is Indian edition and purely as per my research and experience.

One quick tip: pack 2 separate bag, one for mama and one for baby, and if possible do labeling on the baby’s items and make your husband or whosoever is going to attend you in the hospital aware of all the essential items which are packed for baby.

Let’s start with baby’s bag:

  1. 3 pairs of rompers – You should pack at least 3 pairs of rompers because depending on your delivery whether it’s a normal or a c-sec you will be staying at the hospital for 2-3 days. So pack accordingly and with rompers, you don’t need to buy mittens and booties as this will cover the entire body
  2. 2 nice big baby towels to wrap the baby
  3. Quick dry sheets – Buy on Firstcry
  4. Baby wipesBuy on Amazon
  5. Bibs – Buy on Firstcry
  6. Wash clothes for a newborn baby – Buy on Firstcry
  7. Diapers – I would suggest going for pampers active diapers as this one comes with an indication marker line that will tell you when the diaper is full. I highly recommend going for diapers over cloth nappy as this will make your life easy. If you still feel the need for cotton nappy then pack this also. Buy on Amazon
  8. Swaddler/baby wrap – A swaddle helps your baby feel safe and secure as he/she adjusts to life outside the womb. Swaddling helps prevent her from flailing her arms and legs, which can trigger her startle reflex and potentially cause her to wake up. A swaddle keeps baby cozy and warm until her internal thermostat kicks into gear

Let’s prepare mother’s bag

  1. Night gowns and comfortable slippers/flip flops – though some hospitals provide their own gowns but if you have some problem wearing hospital gowns then you should pack 2-3 gowns for yourself. Do not forget to pack a pair of comfortable flip flops, it will be super easy for you to slide in and go to the restroom
  2. Towel – 1, napkins – 2
  3. Safety pins – big ones
  4. Maternity Pads – you need maternity packs for this situation, your whisper ultra wings or extra long is not going to work here. Sometimes hospital provides their own pads but its better to pack a tiny packet as per your comfort
  5. Nursing bra – I don’t think I need to elaborate this one, you know the purpose. If you are a first-time mom then it’s better to visit the store and try and buy there. You won’t be able to judge teh exact size in online option. Personally I recommend buying nursing bras by Triumph as I have bought it for myself and I am quite satisfied with the product. If you do not want to invest in expensive bras for the hospital bag then buy 2 normal ones and later on, you can buy as per your comfort.
  6. Panties – better to pack your old panties which you can use and throw as you will experience heavy bleeding in this phase. I recommend buying high waist/ hipster panties.
  7. Toiletries – bathing soap, toothpaste and brush, shampoo, comb, lip balm, body lotion, and moisturizer
  8. Charger for your smartphone and camera – you don’t want to miss out on the first selfie and informing the relatives about the good news because looking at the current situation hospital will allow only 1 attendant.

Hope you find this list useful! all the best for your new member’s arrival.
